At the beginning there was an egg. Or a chicken.
Passion for the egg – Munatukku Nikula story
The first eggs were laid on the Nikula farm just after the war. Over the decades, the family farm has grown in size and is now in the hands of the fourth generation, who have a passion for producing eggs.
Today, the Nikula farm produces enriched cage chickens eggs and cage-free chickens eggs. For us, the welfare of the chickens is our priority: our chickens come to our own farm when they are one day old and live on our farm for the rest of their lives. We feed our chickens with a high proportion of home-grown grains and no fishflour at all.
We are guided by ethics and domesticity. In the future, we aim to feed our chickens entirely with feed produced on our own farm. We promote local production by offering packaging services to other egg farms. As a result, plenty of pure Finnish food reaches shops and people's tables through us.
Whether you are a retailer, producer or consumer, we would be happy to tell you more about what we do. You can buy our tasty eggs in well-stocked grocery stores or directly from our farm from our self-service shop Munamarket!
History of the farm & key years
At the moment, Patrik Nikula is in charge of our chicken farm, but other members of the family are also working hard. Mandy Yli-Viikari, Leif Viitanen and Jukka Nikula give their whole heart to the farm!
1940s
Kustaa and Alli Nikula founded the farm, which included a considerable size chicken house. The farm is named Kauriskallio.
1960s
Kalle and Raili Nikula build more chicken houses on the farm.
1987
Kalle and Raili's son Jukka Nikula takes over the farm. There are already 5000 chickens.
1990s
The chicken business expands and a hatchery is built on the farm, where the chickens grow from chicks to adults. In the hatchery, chickens are also raised for neighbours. In 1998, a completely new hatchery is built and all the henhouses are renovated. At the end of the decade and the turn of the millennium, the farm has about 20,000 chickens.
2000s
The business grows by leaps and bounds. In 2009, a new hen house is built with a total capacity of 65,000 chickens. In 2011, the egg packing facility that had previously packed Nikula's eggs is purchased. The purchase creates Munatukku Nikula Oy.
2020-
Kauriskallio and Munatukku Nikula are passed on to the next generation. Patrik Nikula takes the lead on the farm. At the same time, the extension of the hatchery is completed and the hens are converted into cage-free henhouses.
